Vernon H. Bartonek, 86, died May 16, 2008 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born February 4, 1922 at Olmitz, Kansas, the son of Adolph J. and Anna Riedel Bartonek. He married Leona Lichter May 29, 1945 at Olmitz. Mr. Bartonek was a farmer and stockman and worked in maintenance for the State Highway Department of Transportation for nineteen years and Fuller Brush for nine years. He was a Great Bend, Kansas, resident since 1997, coming from Olmitz. Mr. Bartonek was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz. Survivors include his wife, Leona Bartonek, of the home; one son, Alan Bartonek and wife, Linda, Salina, Kansas; two sisters, Mary Goode, Great Bend, Kansas, and Esther Hildreth, Wichita, Kansas; two grandchildren, Daniel Bartonek and Lynae Thompson; and four great-grandchildren, Derrick Bartonek, Krystle Bartonek, Brenna Thompson, and Blake Thompson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene "Babe" Bartonek. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2008 at Bryant Funeral Home. Father Ultan Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials in Mr. Bartonek's name are suggested to St. Ann Catholic Church, in care of the funeral home.
