Thomas W. Tom Kummer, 73, of Great Bend, died March 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born September 24, 1936, at Great Bend, the son of Walter and Jennie (Schartz) Kummer. He married Mary Helen Rohling August 6, 1960, at Cunningham. She survives. Mr. Kummer was a lifetime Great Bend resident. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School with the Class of 1955 and of Fort Hays State University. He was the owner of Kummer Wholesale Beverage and worked at Keller Real Estate and Schremmer Auction. Mr. Kummer was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he served as Parish Council president and on the school commission; the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1976; the Great Bend Jaycees, serving as president in 1966-1967; Great Bend Rotary Club, serving as president 1976-1977 and treasurer from 2005-2009; Knights of Columbus, serving as treasurer; Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps; and the Great Bend Board of Realtors. Mr. Kummer received the Distinguished Service Award from the United States Jaycees and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the home, include three sons, Tony Kummer and wife Margo of Winston-Salem, N.C., Terry Kummer and wife Margaret of Colby and Steve Kummer and wife Kim of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Ethan Kummer, Anna Kummer and Abbie Kummer; his mother-in-law, Lucy Rohling of Cunningham; two brothers-in-law, Denis Lutz of Great Bend and Richard Rohling and wife Diane of Pratt; three sisters-in-law, JoAnn Clouse and husband Ken of Lawrence, Janet Schield and husband Terry of Medicine Lodge and Marlene Miller and husband Larry of Ingalls; and 18 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Lutz, his father-in-law, Joseph Rohling, and one nephew, Chris Miller. A vigil service with Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010 at St. Patrick Catholic Church Great Bend. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2010 at Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Celebrant Father Reginald A. Urban. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home and after 6 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Donations to a memorial fund for the CKMC Foundation to benefit the Heartland Cancer Center, BCC Foundation Kummer Family Scholarship to benefit nursing and business students, and the Holy Family School Endowment Fund, may be made in care of the funeral home.
