Rita Farthing, 84, died February 29, 2008 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born March 7, 1923 at Middlesborough, England, the daughter of George W. and Elizabeth Mary Forrest Spencer. She married Dale M. Farthing September 14, 1945 at Peterborough, England. He died September 11, 1991. Mrs. Farthing was a homemaker, residing in Great Bend since 1981, coming from El Dorado, Arkansas, and Carmi, Illinois. Mrs. Farthing was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include three sons, Gary M. Farthing, Oakland, California, William D. "Bill" Farthing, Hays, Kansas, and James A. Farthing, Houston, Texas; two daughters, Linda K. Saenz, Great Bend, Kansas, and Susan D. Brown, Woodward, Oklahoma; one brother, George Spencer, Australia; thirteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Farthing was preceded in death by a son, David S. Farthing; one brother, Allan Spencer; and two sisters, Anne Hobson and Elsie Edwards. Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Bryant Funeral Home. The Reverend Gary Brooks will preside. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas. Friends may call from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2008 and 9:00 a.m. to service time, Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center Alzheimer's Unit, in care of the funeral home.
