Ray S. Schenkel, 77, died Dec. 15, 2012, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Topeka, KS. On Aug. 12, 1959, he married Laura Ann Steinbacher at Great Bend. She survives. Other survivors include two sons; Scott and wife Leilani, and their children Evan and Cory, and Todd and wife Michelle, and their children Taylor and Tate. Ray was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident. He was a guidance counselor at Harrison Junior High and taught Geography, History, and Driver's Education at Roosevelt Junior High. He later owned and operated Schenkel Construction for over 20 years. He was active with the Barton County Historical Society. He also was a member of the Club at StoneRidge and served as past president of the Lake Barton Golf Association. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend. Visitation 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with family present 7 to 9 p.m. A private inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials to Heartland Cancer Center, or Barton County Historical Society.
