Margaret Elizabeth Walter passed away on August 12, 2007. She was known to many as Darlene due to her mother's indecisive nature when it came to naming her daughter back in 1929. Margaret was born on August 17, 1929 to Roby D. and Sally Jane Hawk Baltzell in Great Bend, KS where she lived her entire life. She graduated from Great Bend High School with the class of 1947 and then began studying accounting in college at both Washington State and Ohio University. She married Harold L. Walter on January 14, 1951 at Great Bend, Kansas. She spent many happy years supporting him as a firefighter's wife and raising their three children - David, Linda, and Debbie. She began managing the Baltzell Motel in 1968, eventually becoming the owner in 1997. Margaret also owned and operated the Indian Shop from the lobby of the motel for many years in the 1970's and 80's. She retired from the motel business in 2005. She loved spending time with her family, baking, sewing, and reading, but her true passion was traveling. She visited every state in the USA and then started traveling aboard - including Ireland, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Mexico, England, Spain, and the Caribbean. Margaret Walter was a very special lady. She was known and loved for her lack of fear, willingness to try anything at least once, her dry wit, and her undying sense of humor. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Harold Walter, retired fire chief of the home and three children: David Walter and wife Kim of Hays,Kansas, Linda Acker of Dallas, Texas and Debbie Wamsley and husband Dennis of Centennial, Colorado. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jason Kramer and wife Kellie, Jeffrey Kramer and wife Allison, Loren Acker, Brian Walter, Kyle Walter and wife Christina, and Michael Wamsley. She also has two step grand-daughters, Charise Oelger and husband Denny and Michelle Desmarteau and three great-grandchildren, Katlyn and Haley Kramer and Peyden Oelger. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Roby D. and Sally Jane Baltzell; one brother, Roby Don Baltzell Jr. and two sisters, Doris Lee Ogan and Deanna Jane Baltzell.
