James R. Phelps, 68, died April 19, 2010 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born December 19, 1941 at Benton, Illinois, the son of Richard "Dick" and Loventrice (Hooten) Phelps. He was later raised by his mother and step-father, Chester and Loventrice Dyer. A Dallas, Texas, resident for thirty years, coming from Great Bend, Mr. Phelps was a farmer, salesman, and business owner. Survivors include his mother, Loventrice Hooter, Hutchinson; two sons: Damon Phelps and wife Lisa, Hoisington, Kansas; and Rick Phelps and wife Kathye, Ellinwood, Kansas; one brother, Larry Phelps and wife Bonnie, Hudson, Florida; two sisters: Kathleen Smith and husband Blake, Arroyo Grande, California; and Debbie Issinghoff and husband Chad, Hutchinson; ten grandchildren: Amanda King, Devin Ramsey, Keylin Phelps, Brevan Phelps, Madilyn Phelps, Isabella Phelps, Jenna Phelps, Cody Phelps, Audrey Barnard, and Eric Hellerud; and one great-grandchild, Dylan King. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brandon Phelps. Graveside memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 23, 2010 at Great Bend Cemetery with Pastor Don Fisher officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are requested to the American Lung Association, in care of the funeral home.
