Obituary

Gilbert Roger Bates, 90, died October 16, 2014, at Medical City Hospital, Dallas, Texas. He was born August 10, 1924, in Otis, Kansas, the son of Edward and Lena (Jessup) Bates. Gilbert served during World War II in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He retired from oil field sales. Gilbert was a former member of the First Assembly of God, Great Bend, where he had served as a deacon for many years. Mr. Bates was a Dallas, Texas resident for the last several years coming from Great Bend. Gil spent his last several years in Dallas with his family, learning the city and enjoying new experiences. Not surprising to those who knew him, stubborn and independent to the end. Most importantly, always a faithful servant to his Lord, leaving his family an incredible Christian heritage. On Dec. 24, 1947, he married Hildred Allene Munger in Hoisington. She died Feb. 11, 1999. Survivors include: two daughters, Stephanee Bates of Dallas, Shari Bates Stephens and husband Lawrence of Dallas; and four grandchildren, Lt. Rique Sanchez, USN of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Alexis Stephens, Audrey Stephens, and Alec Stephens all of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Del Lynn Bates Sanchez; three brothers, Ivan, Melvin, and Clifford; and two sisters Wanda and Bettie. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2014, at Hoisington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O.
