Evelyn J. Appel, 76, died January 7, 2009 at Central Kansas Medical Center. She was given the gift of life July 10, 1932 at Alexander, Kansas, the daughter of Henry H. and Pauline (Schneider) Grose. She married Cleatus Appel December 3, 1950 at Bazine, Kansas. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Bazine, Mrs. Appel was a secretary for Barton County Community College's Office of Fine Arts for twenty-one years. Mrs. Appel was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Barton County Cougar Booster Club, Great Bend. Survivors include her husband, Cleatus Appel, of the home; one son: Brad Appel and wife, Sandra, Bartlett, Texas; two daughters: Mary Lou Appel, Aurora, Colorado; and Rhonda Juel, Greensburg, Kansas; three brothers: Ruben Grose, Hutchinson, Kansas; Marvin Grose, Blairsville, Georgia; and Alvin Grose, Great Bend, Kansas; one sister: Janice Hawkinson, Ness City, Kansas; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Vaughn Grose. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 10, 2009 at First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Gary Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 9, 2009 at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials in Mrs. Appel's name have been established with First United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
