Doris M. Rice, 82, died September 8, 2009 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, Kansas. She was born October 19, 1926 at Raymond, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Lydia (Sewing) Winkelman. She married Norman Rice March 1, 1947 at Wichita. Living in Andover for the last two years, Mrs. Rice had been a resident of Great Bend since 1950, coming from Stafford, Kansas. She worked recently for Coldwell Banker Sell Real Estate. She had previously worked for Wal-mart for fifteen years and ARMCO Steel, presently known as National-Oilwell Supply Company, where she retired at the age of fifty-five after thirty-seven years. Mrs. Rice was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 Auxiliary and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary Aerie #646, all of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband, Norman Rice, of the home; one son, Mark Rice, Wichita, Kansas; three brothers: Ralph Winkelman and wife, Kathryn, Rockport, Texas; Maurice Winkelman and wife, Eloise, Ellinwood, Kansas; and Steve Winkelman and wife, Joan, Wichita, Kansas; one sister: Verda Everett, Van Wert, Ohio; one granddaughter, Kely Rice, Wichita, Kansas; and step-grandson, Dmitriy Smirnov, Sarasota, Florida. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 14, 2009 at Bryant Funeral Home. Pastor Kristin Neitzel will officiate. Entombment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2009 and from 9:00 a.m. to service time, Monday, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
